When considering a new job offer, the decision rarely comes down to one factor, particularly when the increase in salary is accompanied by different responsibilities, working conditions and expectations. Assuming the offers are financially viable, which consideration would carry the greatest weight in your decision? I am interested in how professionals at different career stages approach this question, especially those moving from technical work into management or considering a change of industry.

Choosing Between Two Career Offers

Before accepting a new job offer, find out what success will mean after six months, whether you will make decisions or wait for approval, and whether the promised training comes with actual supervision and opportunities to practise.

Consider a marketing officer in Nairobi comparing two opportunities:

๐Ÿ“Œ The first offers a higher salary and a managerial title, but most decisions remain with the founder, the advertising budget is uncertain and no one can explain the position's performance measures.

๐Ÿ“Œ The second offers less money, yet provides responsibility for a defined budget, regular reviews with an experienced supervisor, exposure to decisions beyond the marketing department and an opportunity to account for commercial results.

The proper comparison begins with the work itself:

1. Will you make decisions or simply carry instructions?
2. Will you be accountable for an identifiable result for which you have the authority and resources required or occupy a title whose duties change whenever management is under pressure?
3. A job description should answer these questions before an employee resigns from a position they already understand.

๐Ÿ“Œ A graduate may need supervised practice and credible references.
๐Ÿ“Œ A professional seeking middle management may need budget ownership, stakeholder negotiation and experience leading colleagues.
๐Ÿ“Œ Someone considering a sector change may value exposure to systems and standards recognised beyond one employer.

Career development is more convincing when it can be demonstrated through work completed, rather than training attendance alone.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that 39 percent of workers' existing skills will change or become outdated by 2030, based on the employers it surveyed. That global projection is not a forecast for Kenya individually, but it offers a reason to examine whether today's position prepares you for tomorrow's responsibilities.

Is accepting a lower salary ever a reasonable career decision?

It can be, provided the remuneration remains financially sustainable and there is credible evidence that the alternative position offers something professionally valuable, such as greater responsibility, specialist experience or a structured development opportunity. An informal promise of future promotion is not equivalent to an agreed development arrangement.

What should graduates and experienced professionals prioritise?

Graduates may place considerable value on structured supervision, opportunities to practise their skills and work that produces credible references. Experienced professionals considering managerial or specialist appointments should examine decision-making authority, complexity, measurable responsibilities and the relevance of the experience to their intended career direction.

Neither group should overlook employment security, organisational conditions or personal circumstances when assessing an offer.

๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ: compare take-home pay, transport, working hours, contract terms and predictable expenses, rather than treating professional growth as an excuse to overlook immediate obligations. For someone supporting a household, a dependable increase in income may rightly outweigh an uncertain promise of mentorship.

Before accepting, ask the manager what success looks like after six months, which decisions the role owns, how feedback is given and what previous employees have progressed to.

If you are considering a move this year, which part of the offer would you investigate more carefully before making a decision?

How to Answer โ€œTell Me About Yourselfโ€

โ€œTell me about yourselfโ€ can be difficult to answer because candidates are trying to decide what to include, what to leave out and how to demonstrate their suitability without sounding rehearsed. The answer is not to memorise a speech; it is to understand the role, select relevant evidence and explain the connection between your background and the employerโ€™s requirements. This guide gives graduates, career changers and experienced professionals a four-part structure they can adapt to their own circumstances, whether their strongest evidence comes from a first internship, an academic project, a period of volunteering or years of professional responsibility. Save the checklist before your next interview and share it with someone preparing for an opportunity.
